Lower Eastside Girls Club Receives New York State Senate Capital Funding
New York, NY: On June 7, 2008, The Lower Eastside Girls Club was the recipient of a New York State Capital Funding Grant. Presented by the office of Senator Martin Connor, the gift of $125,000 will be used in the construction of the Lower Eastside Girls Club's new Center for Community on Avenue D between 7th and 8th streets in Manhattan.
The sustainably-built "green" and technologically sophisticated Center for Community will house all Girls Club programming and the organization's three social venture businesses, commercial and small business incubator space, and a mixed income housing development to be developed by a commercial partner, The Dermot Company.
The Lower Eastside Girls Club currently serves five hundred youth ages 8 to 23 from low-income families. This number will increase three-fold, to 1500 girls and their families when the new facility opens in early 2010.
About the Lower Eastside Girls Club
The Lower Eastside Girls Club was founded in 1996 to address the vast disparity in services for girls in a neighborhood with two "boys only" Boys Clubs and no comparable facilities for girls. In less then a decade the Girls Club is proud to have built an organization that goes beyond contemporary social service models to deliver innovative, exciting and comprehensive programs for girls and young women ages 8-23 and their families.
The Lower Eastside Girls Club is dedicated to providing a safe place where economically disadvantaged girls and young women can grow, learn, have fun, and develop confidence in themselves and their ability to make a difference in the world.
Said State Senator Martin Connor upon presenting the check, "Girls are the future of this country. The Lower Eastside Girls Club has served young women and girls in the community for more than a decade. It is a place where hundreds of girls can dream big and develop their unlimited potential. I'm delighted to present the girls club with $125,000 New York State Senate capital funding to help them build the Center for Community which will allow them to serve thousands of more girls in our neighborhood."
