RE:  Governor’s Bi-Partisan News Conference on China’s Relief Efforts

Dear Governor Paterson:

We are writing to support the bi-partisan news conference to urge New York State residents to provide assistance to China’s Sichuan earthquake survivors.  My staff has had conversations with George Hu of your office and will continue to follow-up on future developments.

More than 15 million people live in the affected area of the Sichuan Province of China with almost 4 million in the City of Chengdu.  On May 28th, Chinese officials raised the Sichuan earthquake’s death toll to 68,100 with 21,000 people still listed as missing.   New Yorkers have stood together in previous natural disasters by providing assistance and making donations on behalf of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, as well as the 2004 Tsunami in Indonesia that took 130,000 lives.

The following are the Senate Democratic Conference’s preliminary recommendations in preparing for the bi-partisan news conference:

 ü Leader writes a check;

ü Governor to establish a hotline for questions related to donations;

ü  Governor to open New York State facilities for donation collection;

ü Establish an “800” American Red Cross Hotline for New York State residents;

ü Open each Senate district office for donation collection;

ü Urge schools across New York State to provide donation collection boxes;

ü Suggested contributions to include, but not limited to new: tents, bandages, gloves, toothbrushes, baby wipes, batteries, flashlights, lotion, protective clothing, goggles, thermometers, toiletries, bottled water, canned food and juice.

We look forward to participating in this humanitarian outreach effort that is being coordinated by your office.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
